How to get an EIN for your LLC
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit federal tax ID for your business. It’s free, and most LLC owners can get one online in a single sitting.
Does your LLC need an EIN?
You need one if your LLC:
- Has more than one member
- Has employees or plans to hire
- Elects to be taxed as an S corporation or C corporation
- Must file certain excise or employment tax returns
A single-member LLC with no employees isn’t always required to have one, but it’s still a good idea: banks almost always ask for an EIN to open a business account, and it keeps your Social Security number off invoices and W-9s.
How to apply
- Wait until your LLC is approved by the state — you’ll need the exact legal name and formation date.
- Go to the IRS EIN online application at IRS.gov. Only use the official IRS site; the IRS never charges for an EIN.
- Choose “Limited Liability Company” and answer the questions about members and your state.
- Submit and save the confirmation letter (CP 575) as a PDF — you’ll need it for your bank.
The online tool is available during set hours on weekdays. If you don’t have a Social Security number or ITIN, you’ll generally need to apply by fax or mail using Form SS-4.
Tip: A formation service can request your EIN for you as part of a package. That’s convenient, but the EIN itself is always free from the IRS.
